Leadership Minutes - June 2008

R. KIRK NOWERY is Chief Operating Officer of Samaritan’s Purse, one of the world’s most extensive Christian relief and development organizations. Kirk is a renowned speaker, author and ministry strategist. Prior to joining Samaritan’s Purse, Kirk served as President of ISS, a consulting firm specializing in capital stewardship projects for churches across the U.S. and Canada. For 18 years he was a Senior Pastor of one of the nation’s largest congregations in Miami, Florida, and Chairman of a private Christian school with over 2,000 students. From 1983 to 1995, Kirk was Chaplain of the famed Miami Dolphins football team. Kirk and his wife, Denise, are the parents of three grown children, all of whom are engaged in full-time ministry.  

1.  What is the greatest benefit of compassion and relief ministry as it relates to spreading the Gospel?

2.  Why is there a greater focus on this sort of ministry in the last decade?

3.  Can you share some basic guidelines that would help a church launch and grow a local compassion ministry?

4.  Do you have any advice for the local church pastor and board planning compassion and relief into their annual budget?

5.  Are there any significant mistakes that churches need to avoid when it comes to relief efforts?

6.  Are there any new trends worth noting when it comes to spreading the Gospel through the meeting of felt needs?
